Strapped for cash? Don’t have a dollar to spare? But don’t want to miss out all that Sydney has to offer? Here’s an idea: you could explore one of New South Wales’ most spectacular coastlines. From Bondi to Coogee, spend the day surfing, swimming, drinking beers and watching the sun go down along this beautiful, 7 km coastal stretch. You’ll see Sydney from a local’s point of view and it’s free, everyone loves a freebie!.

Bondi Beach

Start this stunning coastal walk from Bondi Beach. If you’re staying in Sydney, take the bus from Hyde Park to Bondi Beach, which will cost about $2 and takes about 30 minutes. We recommend getting off the bus a stop early at Bondi Junction – about a 5 minute walk from the beach. It’s a trendy beach town with a hippy vibe; spend some time meandering through the markets, which sell everything from pizza to thongs (flip flops obviously).

Bondi Beach itself is a gorgeous one kilometer stretch of golden sand and clear blue waters. Pick up a surfboard and learn how to ride the waves, or head to the north end of the beach for gentler waves. As an added bonus, there are tons of surf schools along Bondi Beach to help you become a pro.

Tamarama Beach

Head south of Bondi Beach past the cliff to Tamarama Beach, a quiet little cove where surfers come to escape the busy crowds of Bondi. It’s a haven of tranquility. You’ll feel like you’ve found a secret spot no one else knows about.

Bronte

Carry along the picturesque coastal walk (look out for the sculptures by the sea) and you’ll reach Bronte. Bronte town is the perfect place to stop off for lunch, as it’s brimming with restaurants, cafes and delis. We recommend Jenny’s for the best sandwiches in town. Go for the Thai sweet chili chicken wrap, washed down with an apple and ginger smoothie – it’s fresher than fresh. Oh, and the coffees aren’t bad either! If you’re feeling a little more energetic, go for swim on Bronte Beach or in the Bronte Baths, swimming pools in the sea. The pools are free for anyone to use and bonus, no sharks either!

Coogee

As your day draws to a close, head along your last stretch of the coastal walk through Burrows Park to the small beach town of Coogee. Chill out on the beach with a couple of beers and watch the sun go down. The sunset is well worth the walk. From here you can get the bus back to Sydney for a couple of dollars or stay the evening in one of beach side hostels.

You don’t have to spend an arm and a leg to see Sydney and New South Wales properly. Save a few dollars walking along this spectacular stretch of coastline and spend the day like a real Aussie.
