In honor of national cable car day, we are celebrating our favorite cable cars and funiculars around the world! Make sure you have your camera charged and don’t have a fear of heights when using these to get around!
1. San Francisco Cable Car: The original bad boy of cable cars is an American staple. You can’t go to San Francisco without riding the world’s last manually operated cable car.
2. McKinney Ave Trolley: A hometown favorite for STA Traveler’s, this cable car takes you around different pockets of Dallas – from the bar scene to the art scene to downtown. A perfect way to get around the Big D!
3. Table Mountain Aerial Cableway: This cable car gives incomparable views of South Africa – the bottom of the car rotates 360 degrees! Take the car all the way to the top or stop along the way to have a picnic.
4. Mount Solaro Chairlift: Technically not a cable car or furnicular, this chairlift takes you from the Capri to the highest point on the island. The views of Italy and the Mediterranean absolutely take your breath away.
5. Lisbon’s Yellow Cable Car: Often called the San Francisco of Europe, Libson is also equipped with its own cable cars. The beach, palm trees and beautiful architecture make this a can’t-miss ride!
6. Sugar Loaf Funicular: This funicular lets you feel like you are on top of the world, or at least on top of Rio de Janeiro. Get a bird’s eye view of Brazil’s beaches and cities and unique glimpse of Christ the Redeemer.
7. Grindelwald-Männlichen Cableway: This cableway is perfect if you want to get face to face with the Swiss Alps. The Bernese Oberland will take your breath away as you travel to the top of Switzerland’s famous peaks.
8. Gulmarg Gondola: One of the world’s highest operating cable cars, this will take you to the top of Kongdoori Mountain, in India. Make sure to bring your skis – this is India’s winter wonderland.
