This Pacific sea turtle project fights to improve the chance of survival for endangered turtle hatchings on Matapalo Beach.

Night time is the exciting time when a lot of work is needed – beach patrols to locate nesting turtles and relocate the nests, collecting data on turtles, and releasing them into the ocean.

During the day everyone pitches in to keep the beach free of dangerous litter, monitor nests to prevent eggs from being eaten and help keen the volunteer dorm clean.

  • Introduction

    Spend your days volunteering at a sea turtle project on Costa Rica`s Pacific coast. In your free time enjoy all that Playa Matapalo has to offer including surf lessons, relaxing on the beach and enjoying legendary sunsets.

    The Pacific Sea Turtle Project is a conservation initiative undertaken to protect endangered sea turtles and their nests, and improve the chance for survival of hatchlings on Matapalo Beach. Using man-made turtle hatcheries (called `viveros`) to protect turtle eggs and joining in vigilant beach patrols, volunteers provide vital resources and support.

    Seasonal project from July to November.

  • Day 1 – Arrival San Jose

    Welcome to Costa Rica – an amazing country offering pristine cloud forests and the Pacific coast’s famous surf, you will experience some of the world’s most incredible scenery and exotic wildlife—and make a lasting impact while you’re there!

    Transfer from San José airport to your San José hostel.

  • Day 2 – San Jose to Playa Matapalo

    Welcome to Costa Rica – an amazing country offering pristine cloud forests and the Pacific coast’s famous surf, you will experience some of the world’s most incredible scenery and exotic wildlife—and make a lasting impact while you’re there!

    Transfer from San José airport to your San José hostel.

  • Day 3 to 6 – On the project

    Spend your days volunteering at the sea turtle project. Activities will include night patrols along the beach, data collection, beach clean-up and area maintenance, monitoring of the baby turtle hatchery, counting baby turtles and releasing them -depending on the season. Volunteers also share in household chores and cooking of meals and clean-up. Your days are very busy and activities vary from day to day, depending on current projects and season.

    In your spare time enjoy the very sleepy beach-side town of Playa Matapalo. Leisure activities can include surf lessons, relaxing on the beach and enjoying legendary sunsets.

  • Day 7 – Departure

    The volunteer project coordinator can assist you with organizing your return to San José or any continuing travel you may have planned. Hopefully you are able to stay a few more weeks longer on this worthwhile project!
