There really is no city like San Francisco. From the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, to the mysterious Alcatraz this land of fog has so much to offer. It is easy to tick off the MUST see attractions, but how can you be sure you are experiencing the real San Fran? Here is a few local tips to help you make the most of your trip!
Where to have breakfast
We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. This is even truer in the USA, so you do NOT want to get this wrong. For a guaranteed feast head to ‘MyMy’ in Nob Hill. This place gets busy, so if you can drag yourself out of bed a little earlier (especially on the weekend) you should get in without having to queue too long. Trust me it is worth the wait! Alternatively head to ‘Just for you’ for that proper American dinner experience. Try their Biscuits and Gravy – an odd concept for us here in the UK but surprisingly delicious!
Where to continue eating
For a true local gem, head to Seven Hills in Nob Hill. This is a small intimate Italian with a very personal feel. The staff are incredible, describing every dish on their menu with the passion you would expect from Italians. It’s not cheap, but a great way to spend your last night in the city. Be sure to book at least a day before – it’s a local favourite! For a cheap, on the go lunch head to Saigon Sandwich Shop for the BEST sandwich in the whole of San Fran. All the sandwiches are Vietnamese so don’t expect a salami and mayo combo.
Where to drink
When arriving in a big city like San Francisco, sometimes it’s hard to know just where to go for a few drinks in the evening. We have got your back! For the best cocktails if the city head to Tunnel Top bar, a great quirky joint with a relaxed atmosphere. For a drink with a view, head to the aptly named ‘The View’ situated atop the Marriott Marquis hotel. This is a great spot for a leisurely drink after a packed day of exploring the city. For a more buzzing alternative check out Jones, a great bar (cash only!) with good outside space. On the weekends this is open until 2am and gets lively with a cool ‘hipster’ crowd.
Where to spend a day
After you have cycled across the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, and taken a trip to the infamous Alcatraz try and save a day to see a different side of the city. Grab a picnic and head to Shakespeare’s Garden in the Golden Gate Park, such a beautiful place to chill and watch the world go by. Next up take a walk up to Tank Hill park for great views and a good exercise! Visit Belden Place, the cute little French Quarter or European Quarter of the city and the site of the annual Bastille day!
