Music Festivals in Japan

When you think of Japan, you probably don’t think of music festivals do you? Well, you should. Because they have festivals that would give Glastonbury a run for their money. Japan is a fascinating land of contrasts filled with plenty to see. So while you’re exploring The Land of the Rising Sun, why not break up your sightseeing with one of these festivals…

Fuji Rock Festival

Where: Naeba Ski Resort, Japan
Why: Fuji Rock is a breath of fresh air compared to other music festivals, literally. Based high up in the ski resort of Naeba, the organizers never fail to put on a wide spectrum of musical acts from different genres as well as huge headliners
Previous highlights: Sigur Ros, Beck, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and James Blake
Top tip: Take the cable car to the top of the mountain for an incredible view looking down on the festival

Summer Sonic

Where: Tokyo and Osaka
Why: Summer Sonic is Fuji Rock‘s younger sibling. Overlooking Tokyo Bay, Summer Sonic’s massive main stage delivers a diverse collective of genres from rock to rap. The light shows are out of this world as well!
Previous highlights: Radiohead, Weezer, Mark Ronson and The 1975
Top tip: Personal space doesn’t exist at concerts… unless you’re in Japan because the crowds are extremely respectful. So don’t worry about getting to the stage early for the band you want to see. Chances are you can turn up as they’re playing and still get yourself a great spot

Rock in Japan

Where: Hitachinaka, Ibaraki, Japan
Why: If you want to experience the best of Japanese talent, Rock in Japan is for you! The festival itself is incredibly organized. If you’re looking to spend your day at the festival and the night exploring Japan, this festival is perfect because the music finishes at 9pm
Top tip: There’s a great range of Japanese cuisine on offer, but if sushi isn’t your thing then head to the Hillside Café where you can find pizza and tacos!

Ultra Japan

Where: Tokyo, Japan
Why: Fan of Dance, House or Urban music? Then Ultra Japan is the festival for you! Tokyo is famous for its lights and technology, so it’s no surprise that every DJ set will offer you a visually stunning experience
Previous highlights: deadmau5, Kygo, Martin Garrix, Knife Party and Galantis
Top tip: You can spend your nights sleeping in the comfort of a bed because there’s no need to camp when you’re only 18 minutes away from both Tokyo and Shibuya’s train stations
