Tour style – Learn & Volunteer

7 days

Take part in a successful after-school program that helps to improve the lives of children who live just outside the beautiful colonial town of Antigua. Making lasting friendships and living with a local family adds to the unforgettable experience.
About this Project: This project seeks to provide meaningful education opportunities to over 1000 children who hail from poor coffee-growing families. The goal is to help improve living conditions and provide skills and confidence needed to create a brighter future. Programs include computer classes, tutoring in
reading and writing skills, English classes, recreational activities and a bi-monthly health clinic.
A day in the life of a volunteer:
•Spend 4–6 hours per day working alongside friendly staff and international volunteers
•Share your skills and enthusiasm in areas of your interest
•Take part in IT programs, literacy, arts, crafts and sports
•Participate in recreational and educational activities that make learning fun
•Inspire children to continue with their studies
•Learn about life in a Guatemalan homestay and greatly improve your Spanish skills
•Explore the beautiful and famous colonial town of Antigua before or after your volunteer experience
  • Day 1 San Miguel Dueñas / Volunteer Project

Transfer from Guatemala City airport to your family homestay at the volunteer project, which is about 20 minutes outside of Antigua, approximately 1 hour driving time.
Once the third largest city in all of Spanish America, Antigua served as Guatemala’s capital city for more than 200 years until it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1773. Antigua today is a peaceful, partially restored colonial city that is a pleasure to explore.
In your spare time, walk through quiet cobblestone streets past rebuilt stucco homes with heavy, beautifully carved wooden entrances. It is a short 45 km from Guatemala City on a lovely winding road. The natural scenery is some of the most beautiful anywhere with high mountain peaks surrounding deep valleys,
every inch of land covered with lush growth. The point of reference for finding one’s way around Antigua is the Central Park, which is directly in the centre of town and the place to be in the late afternoon or early evening. You can pick up a map from the tourist office located on the ground floor of the Palace of the
Captains-General on the south side of the Central Park. Explore the museums, the colonial buildings and other sites in this delightful town.

  • Days 2-6 San Miguel Dueñas / Volunteer Project (6B,5L,6D)

Your weekends are free to enjoy all that this beautiful place has to offer.
The aim of this project is to improve the living conditions of over 1000 children who come from poor coffee-growing families by providing meaningful education opportunities to help them gain the skills and confidence they need to create a brighter future.
