Introduction
Prepare to be surrounded by dazzling Caribbean reefs and the pristine beaches of Playa del Carmen, as you volunteer at a children’s centre run by Save the Children.
Save the Children is absolutely committed to ensuring that children are safe and know their rights. Many parents in this part of Mexico have to work long hours in order to support their families, meaning young children are often left alone and have to look after themselves for large parts of the day. Others may have been victims of aggression and are in need of support. The centre gives children a suitable environment in which to play and learn.
The time you will spend volunteering really can make a difference to the health, safety and futures of these children.
Volunteers will help on a range of projects throughout their time at the centre – this mainly depends on what the children need the most at any one time.
Please note: 20 hours of Spanish lessons must be pre-book if volunteers are not fluent. The lessons are in small groups or 1:1 with a local Spanish speaker. Many of the locals you’ll work with don`t speak English, so It`s a great way to get to know the people you’ll work with better.

A week in the life of a volunteer
Monday to Friday:
Throughout your time on the programme, you will be helping with homework, preparing posters and educational resources, tidying the centre and playing games with the children. A lot of the work focuses on making children aware of how to keep safe, from teaching them how to identify different forms of violence to making sure they know their rights. Severe weather is a very real threat in this part of Mexico, so you may also be involved in advising children of safety measures to take during a hurricane.Free Time:
Weekends are yours to enjoy all that the Riviera Maya has to offer. Visit Mayan ruins, including Tulum, Coba and Chichen Itza, snorkel in a cenote, explore the Caribbean’s magical reefs or just take it easy on the white sand beaches of Playa del Carmen!
